About the artist

Noelia Abreu is a Dominican-born artist raised in Westchester, New York, and currently based in New Rochelle. Primarily self-taught, she creates figurative yet surreal paintings that explore identity, femininity, nature, and transformation. Her compositions draw from dreams, visions, and an interior symbolic world, often presenting their central figures with an icon-like presence—framed by flowers, light, and objects charged with personal meaning.

Through vivid color and symbolic storytelling, Abreu creates images that invite wonder and curiosity while revealing something intimate beneath the visible surface. Her work has appeared in exhibitions throughout New York, and in 2018 she was commissioned by the City of New Rochelle to create the public artwork Succulent Sky.

Artist Statement

My paintings emerge from dreams, visions, and symbols that return to me with a sense of significance. Through figurative yet surreal imagery, I explore femininity, identity, nature, and transformation, giving physical form to an interior world that can be felt more easily than it can be explained.

Femininity is not only represented visually in my work; painting has also become a tool for repairing and deepening my relationship with my own feminine identity. I often present the central figure with an icon-like presence, framed by flowers, light, and symbolic objects. These elements create a personal visual language—part memory, part intuition, and part mystery. My sigil extends this language as a mark of creative identity and intention.

I am interested in the moment when something personal begins to feel universal. Through vivid color and symbolic storytelling, I invite viewers to enter each image with curiosity, discover their own connections, and experience a sense of wonder without needing every mystery to be resolved.
